Stop wasting, start saving !

Sainsbury’s Food Rescue is an idea for a simple web tool that helps you find recipes to use up food that may otherwise go to waste. The initial brief was to explore the creative possibilities of Google APIs and products as a way to showcase interesting new ways brands can communicate digitally.

We created a responsive grid system for this project which enable us to easily adopt the layout to different screen sizes.




Connecting Cannes through music

This is a project for spotify at cannes festival this year. The idea is to connect people with their taste of music. We create not only the desktop version for this project, but also another version for touch screen as a small installation.

I was focusing on the 3D visuals and particle movement of this project. I created a simple framework that works for both WebGL and basic 2D canvas. So if user’s browser support WebGL it will automatically change to use WebGL to gain more performance. And also the interactive screen version of this project is built with WebGL.




A Journey to the future

This is an installation project for Samsung at Milan design week. The installation itself is about 21m long and 4m height.

I was working on the interactive part for this project. The idea is to create an interactive particle system that matches the particle flows created by our motion designers. User is able to interact with the particles using Leap Motion. By simply waving their hands and trying to move the particles with their gestures the particle will form an image and reveal a message.

This project is build in C++ with Cinder framework. It was my first attempt to use cinder in a project but it went really well. And also in order to hold a good number of particles I need to put the particle movement calculations into the shader. This method is very abstract and hard to debug but the outcome is very satisfying.

This is a personal project that I work with 2 of my good friend : Bert and Owen. The Initial idea of this is to create a chinese ink/brush style world base on the real map data. Then one day we came across the ancient chinese myth : Kuafu (夸父追日 ) and we all like it. Then we decide to use this story for our project.

Kuafu is a big project and involved a lot testing and experiments. The main part is build in c++ with cinder framework, but also there’s a controller which is a web app and also a sound system build with PureData, and each parts communicate with each other through a node.js server. It’s a big project for just only 3 of us. I am focusing on the 3d visuals and the structure of the whole project. Bertrand is the designer and trying to create this very rich and different feeling world. Owen is the sound designer/developer focus on the interactive sound design.

We entered the competition of Google DevArt program with this project. We didn’t win it but we’ve made it to the top 10 finalist. ( Our project page is here ) We liked the idea of keeping track of the progress of the project just like the DevArt do, so after DevArt is finished we shift our project to here and keep updating our progress there.

I have done a lot of chinese ink and brush texture experiments on this project and use it to create the chinese ink style 3d mountain. I really enjoy this process of creating your own texture with real life materials. And also we are trying to mix western and eastern visual elements together, using traditional brush and ink to make the world with new 3D technologies. These conflicts have been a great inspiration to me.


Star Canvas

Recreate the night sky

This is a R&D project for B-reel London 5 years anniversary. We build this dome and project the whole night sky in it. The stars are based on their actual position in the sky so we can see all the constellations.

And also this is the first project we try with Leap Motion, user is able to control the camera angle and also selecting the constellation via different hand gestures.

It was my first installation project and I was focusing on the visual and 3d part. The project is build with WebGL with a small 3D framework I created. The result if very satisfying and it is also a good R&D for us proving that Web technology can be used on installations.
